Mario Frangoulis



Mario Frangoulis was born in Africa. He was brought up and schooled in Athens, Greece. At the age of 17 he was accepted by the Guildhall School Of Music and Drama, where he studied Drama at the Three Year Professional Acting Course.

In 1988 he graduates from and the same year he wins the coveted Maria Callas Scholarship to study Opera. September later the same year he is offered to play the role of "Marius" in the West end of London, in Cameron Mackintosh's production of "LES MISERABLES" at the Palace Theater, directed by Trevor Nunn. Mario performs this role until Dec.1989. He performs the role of "Marius" twice more ("Les miserables national tour", original cast, Dublin) in the summer of 1993 and for the last time in 1996 he returns to Palace Theater.

1990: Mario Frangoulis moves to Italy to study voice with tenor Carlo Begonzi and graduates from the Verdi academy in Busseto.

1991: Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theater, London, where he plays the role of the romantic hero "Raul" directed by Harold Prince.

1991-1992: Studies voice with tenor Alfredo Kraus and concentrates on vocal technique and Interpretation for the Lyric Tenor Repertoire.

1992-1995: Opera Studies at the Juilliard School, with voice teacher Dodi Protero and with continuous support from the "Maria Callas" scholarship as well as the help of a second scholarship, the prestigious "Alexander Onassis", a scholarship he won in 1992.

Between the years of 1992-1995, he takes part in numerous concerts with respected orchestras such as, BRITISH YOUTH ORCHESTRA, ROYAL OPERA HOUSE (Orchestra and Chorus), GREEK NATIONAL OPERA HOUSE ORCHESTRA, BBC SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, singing alongside known opera artists such as Montserrat Caballe, Alfredo Kraus, Julia-Migenes Johnson, Justino Diaz, Rita Hunter, Dimitri Hnorostovski and others.

1993: A winner of the "Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition" held in Philadelphia.

After his studies at the Juillard School, Mario Frangoulis returns to London to play the young lead "LUN-THA" in the Covent Garden Festival production of "The King Ánd I" in May 1996.

He performs the role once more with the BBC Symphonic Orchestra in a Concert Version Of The Musical, alongside Barbara Cook and Josh Ackland in the roles of Miss Anna and the King.

1996: Same Year, he is offered to play the young lead AGATHON in a short film made for BBC TV telling the story of the book "Symposium" by Plato. The film was shot in England and directed by Christopher Miles.

1997: Mario Frangoulis returns to his country to play the lead in "Happy End", a musical drama by Kurt Weil in which he portrays the role of Bill Kracker.

1997: later the same year he plays a young lead in "The Birds" by Aristophanes and performs in some of the most prestigious Ancient Greek Amphitheaters, including the most important of all, EPIDAUROS.

In the autumn of 1997 Mario Frangoulis plays the lead "Danny Zouko" in GREASE in English and Greek directed by original London Director, David Gilmore at theater VEMBO in Athens.

November 1997- September 1998: performs as a solo artist in a National and later the same year European tour, singing classical song, Opera, popular songs thus gaining experience as a Solo Concert Artist. He records duets with well- known Greek singer George Dalaras and receives his first number gold and later first platinum album.

Sony Classical in New York signs him as an exclusive artist in autumn of 1998.

Sony Music Greece, following the success of two live performances in Athens, invites him to record his first solo album in Greece. This is an immediate success and in little time he receives his second gold, second platinum and later his first double platinum album.

From then onwards he has performed only as a solo artist, inviting however young singers to perform with him. He has created his own orchestra and performs in Greece and Europe regularly.

2000 July :TEATRO ALLA SCALLA, Milan, Mario Frangoulis performs the role of "Tony" in a production of WEST SIDE STORY directed by Joey Macknealy and conducted by Donald Chan.

In December 2000 he released his latest album, which was recorded live from a performance that took place at the Acropolis, in the Herrod Atticus ancient Greek Amphitheater on the 28th August 2000. The album was an instant success and achieved gold status within the first three weeks of its release.

2001: this year Mario Frangoulis is preparing for his international debut album, which will be released in September of 2001 worldwide.

During the spring period he is preparing his debut as a leading actor in an Ancient Greek Tragedy by Euripides "BACCHAE" where he will play the role of DIONISSUS. The play is directed by Vassilis Nikolaides and the stage/costume designer is Nikos Georgiades. The theater to stage this production is the THESSALIKON THEATER and the play is produced by ERODIOS.

This will be an "all-male" cast as it was originally performed and also staring are actors: Nikos Psaras (PENTHEUS), Constantinos Constantopoulos (AGAVE) and others.

Other plans include singing a tribute to Verdi, 100 years since his death, with the CREMLIN SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA in Moscow and two further performances in Cyprus.
